The Vladimir Mother of God
Traditionally painted in somber colors the Mother of God holds the child in her right arm, his head against her cheek with an arm around her neck, her left hand showing the way.
The Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God was venerated as a national sacred possession. Iconographically it falls under the Eleusa type (Eleusa - "Pity or Tenderness" in Greek) or Umileniye in Russian. The icon was brought from Constantinople to Vychgorod near Kiev and in 1155 Prince Andre Bogolyubsky took it to Vladimir. The Icon was named after this city where it became famous. In 1395, when Moscow was in danger of being captured during Tamerlane's invasion, the icon was brought to Moscow and set up in Uspensky Cathedral. (The Dormition of The Virgin Cathedral) in the Moscow Kremlin. Tamerlane retreated. The Icon was then returned to Vladimir and in 1480 it was put back in its former place in the Moscow Kremlin where it remained until 1918. From 1918 to 1930 the icon was kept in the state history museum. In 1930 the icon was turned over to the Tretyakov Gallery.
